I should mention -- the stuff I have listed here may not be any better than the tools linked in a later post. For somebody looking for a bare bones (no pun intended), very simple approach to weight loss, I think this stuff is hard to beat!

I want to recommend to you the Hacker's Diet: http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/hackdiet.html

Everything there is free. Take a little time to explore around the site. I downloaded the PDF version of the book and the Palm tools and made good use of it. I am 30 years old, about 5'9", and I peaked at 240 lbs about two years ago. I lost a bunch of weight while sick a while ago, and then worked to gradually lose more. This summer I started seriously working on weight loss, starting from 214 lbs. I am now at 193 lbs, and while I stalled out recently, I think I'm back on track to start losing more again. The Hacker's Diet has been key to all of my recent success, and I can't recommend it enough. I actually BELIEVE that I will be 170 lbs (or less!) before next summer. Six months ago, I would have been excited to think that I could get below 195 again (it has been a while!)

A pretty good complement to the book is the Physics Diet site, which allows you to track the stuff recommended by the book. http://physicsdiet.com/ I use that as well, although I don't really get much out of it -- it's mainly so I can let my family see how I am doing.

(If you're interested, my profile is here: http://physicsdiet.com/Public.aspx?u=Monkeyman

My last month of records are spectacularly uninspiring. ;-) )

i came across this site after reading get rich slowly and was interested to see what this was all about. so i started reading the posts and finally came to this one. when i got to the last paragraph i kept thinking 'wow this guy was me back in may of this year'. i was 5 foot 10 220 lbs, work a sedentary job, wife, 2 kids (both in diapers) and starting to experience health problems due to my obesity.

what changed? my daughter was born. i realized that i was being selfish. that i owed it to my family to be healthy and an active part of for their life. i owed it to my wife to look good and feel good. this wasn't the guy that she fell in love with and married. i truly felt guilty. so i changed my habits and replace them with healthier options. i made no more excuses, i changed my diet, started lifting weights, started cardiovascular training, and walked home from work.

i am happy to say that i am now 192 lbs, a lot stronger and active. i no longer just veg out in front of the television or computer. i am healthier, happier, and enjoying life with my family.

i wish you all the luck with this blog.

peace!
