It was a great weekend around the Smith house. By great weekend, I mean fun, active, healthy, and productive. We were so busy that the kids didn’t watch their one show per day and I didn’t even miss watching football, baseball, golf, or lawn bowling on TV.
Friday evening we hosted some friends for dinner. Their 2 kids played with our 2 kids and we had some nice conversations.
Saturday morning, I met T for a 10 mile run. We completed the run in 1:40–running for 6 minutes and walking for 30 seconds. We talked about running, kids, spouses, food, and work. T and I have had some really good conversations about food and exercise lately. She’s doing a really good job right now–training for the Blue Lake 15K this coming Saturday. I’m running it with her, but she’s going to kick my butt because she’s in better shape right now.
Then, in the afternoon, we moved the majority of our new plants for our backyard to their permanent places. They arrived Friday afternoon and most of them are now sitting in their pots, ready to be planted in their new homes. We still need a lot more plants, but Pam says she has plenty of stuff to transplant from other areas of the yard. There’s going to be a lot of digging in the next few days. Hopefully we’ll be able to get them all planted soon.
Saturday night, we hosted more friends for dinner. Again, their 2 kids played with our 2 kids and we had some nice conversations. We showed off the new deck and back yard and finished off the night with a camp fire and s’mores. We’ve really been breaking in our new fire pit as we used it again Sunday evening with just the family.
Sunday, Pam took the kids to the pumpkin patch to frolic in the hay and corn mazes. They played in the filbert pit and petted the goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, and chickens. They spent all morning there and part of the afternoon while I went for a little walk with JD.
While Pam was with the kids, I headed up to Portland to walk the final 8.2 miles of the Portland Marathon with JD. I met up with him, right before the 18 mile marker as he came off of the St. Johns Bridge. At that point, he was looking pretty chipper, but said he was hurting pretty badly. By the time we got to the end, his feet were in pretty bad shape and he said he was glad to have me help him along. I was glad to do it. You guys can all look forward to a special guest race report from JD tomorrow.
As I mentioned before, we wrapped up the weekend with another campfire. The kids and Pam played by the fire while I planted two trees in the new yard. They look great in their new resting place. Now it’s time for me to get some rest too.

Sounds like a great weekend. If you aren’t in a huge rush to fill in the plants in your yard I know of a technique you and Pam might enjoy. Air layer: It’s a method of starting roots on a growing plant for later transplanting. Since it’s best done in the early spring, that gives y’all plenty of time to look around at the plants your friends have and consider which ones might work best in your yard. You can learn more here: http://www.learn2grow.com/gardeningguides/propagation/techniques/LearnHowToAirLayer.aspx . I hope this is something that will help you in your quest to build the yard most perfect for your family.
